Abstract

Transparant single crystals of high-temperature type niobium pentoxide (H-Nb 2O 5) up to 6 mm in diameter and 80 mm in length parallel to the [001]-axis were grown for the first time by the floating zone method using a halogen lamp image furnace. The growth conditions were as follows; growth rate 2 mm h -1, rotating of seed and feed rod in opposite directions 30 rpm. Most of the crystals grown along the [001]-axis were free from twinning. In the crystals grown along the [010]-axis, twinning [(10 1 ) as the twinning plane] was always observed.
