Abstract

High-quality single crystals of the organic superconductors ß-(ET) 2I 3 and ß-(ET) 2IBr 2 have been prepared by means of the chemical oxidation of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (ET). The influences of the solvent, the type and quantity of oxidant, ET concentration, and the reaction solution cooling rate on the yield and phase composition of the reaction products, as well as on the morphology and conductivity of single crystals have been studied. The ß-(ET) 2IBr 2 crystals obtained are the most perfect among the organic superconductors, with residual resistance ratio R 4.2 K /R 300 K ⋍ 2.5 × 10 −4 , superconduction transition temperature T c = 2.8 K and transition width ΔT c = 0.1 K.
