Abstract

Structure and growth of a population of the rhizomatous herb Polygonatum verticillatum have been studied in a broad-leaved forest site in Denmark by recording above-ground shoots within a permanent plot from 1974 to 1979, and by excavating and analysing the total rhizome system in 1979. Oldest living rhizome segment could be dated to 1957. The periods 1974-76 and 1977-79 differed in the level of activity of the system, indicated by higher values in the latter period of the following parameters: frequency of above-ground shoots and of rhizome segment formation from renewal and branch buds
