Abstract
A new mixed crystal of Yb:Y0.78Lu0.22VO4 was grown by Czochralski method. The X-ray diffraction result revealed that Yb:Y0.78Lu0.22VO4 crystal possess the tetragonal zircon structure (ZrSiO4, space group I41/amd). The polarized absorption spectra of Yb:Y0.78Lu0.22VO4 mixed crystal was measured. The maximum absorption cross section (σabs) measured for π- and σ-polarization falls at 5.07×10−20cm2 and 2.28×10−20cm2, respectively. The peak of the absorption spectrum for π-polarization appears around 983nm with an FWHM (the full width at half maximum) of 21nm. For σ-polarization, the absorption spectrum is dominated by a very broad band with an FWHM as large as about 44nm.
