Abstract

Spectral quality Er3+∶Sr3Lu2(BO3)4 crystal with dimensions of Ø16×30 mm was grown by the Czochralski method. The spectroscopic properties of Er3+∶Sr3Lu2(BO3)4 crystal were investigated and their spectroscopic parameters were calculated and analysed based on the Judd–Ofelt theory. The effective oscillator intensity parameters Ωt were calculated to be Ω2 = 3·51×10−20 cm2, Ω4 = 2·36×10−20 cm2 and Ω6 = 1·51×10−20 cm2. The emission cross-section was estimated to be 1·88×10−20 cm2 at 1535 nm for E//a, 5·29×10−21 cm2 for E//b and 9·35×10−21 cm2 for E//c respectively. The fluorescence lifetime of the 4I13/2→4I15/2 transition is 0·62 ms. The Er3+ doped Sr3Lu2(BO3)4 crystals may be regarded as 1·55 μm laser gain medium materials.
