Abstract
• Optically transparent Eu-doped LiCl/Li 2 SrCl 4 eutectic was grown. • Its 400 nm emission was ascribed to Eu 2+ 5d-4f transition. • A light yield of ∼7,000 photon/5.5 MeV alpha-ray was achieved. • Scintillation decay time under 2.5 MeV gamma-ray was 49.3 ns (5%) and 297 ns (95%). A 6 LiCl/ 6 Li 2 SrCl 4 eutectic scintillator with a high Li concentration was developed as a novel thermal neutron scintillator. Eu 2+ served as an activator for the 6 Li 2 SrCl 4 phase, and Eu-doped 6 LiCl/ 6 Li 2 SrCl 4 eutectics were grown via the Bridgman Stockbarger method in quartz ampoules (inner diameter = 4 mm). The Eu-doped 6 LiCl/ 6 Li 2 SrCl 4 eutectics exhibited a lamellar-type eutectic structure and optical transparency, as well as 400 nm emission due to Eu 2+ 5d-4f transition. The scintillation properties of the eutectics were evaluated under gamma- and alpha-ray irradiation to demonstrate its potential as a thermal neutron scintillator.
