Abstract

The literature on group therapy in alcoholism is reviewed. Tropical areas include indications for group treatment, types of groups, and phases in group development and treatment. Attention is also given to therapeutic problems and methodological issues in evaluation of effectiveness. While the use of groups is popular in the treatment of alcoholism, weakness of evaluative studies have precluded definitive statements about their effectiveness. The incorporation of recent innovations in evaluation technology in future studies promises findings with greater reliability and validity.
