Abstract

ABSTRACT Three dysfluent children, aged 5;4–6;6, presenting with coexisting language or phonological difficulties were treated on a weekly group basis. Identified language difficulties included, reduced word‐retrieval skills, delay in vocabulary and syntax development, and poor phonological awareness. Therapy targeting these aspects along with direct fluency training was implemented. A simultaneous parents' group examined issues relevant to general management. Treatment took place over six weeks. Sessions lasted IV2 hours and there have been three subsequent follow‐up meetings at six‐week intervals. Assessment results support the view that enhancing language skills may be instrumental in increasing the capacity for fluency.
