Abstract
A survey of psychiatric residency programs reported that 91% of them provide training in group psychotherapy. Eighty-eight percent of the programs offered training during the first two years of the four years of residency. Didactic seminars, supervision, experiential groups and live observation of group psychotherapy were the training methods used in order of frequency. Psychoanalytic, interpersonal, group dynamics, and group process were the theoretical orientations most frequently reported. Fewer trainees came from disciplines other than psychiatry compared with a 1978 survey.
