Abstract

The “Problem Patient Clinic” is a weekly educational experience for medical and psychiatric residents. Ambulatory patients are referred by medical residents who have had difficulties either in diagnosing or management. The team consists of an internist, a psychiatry faculty member, and from one to five residents on rotation. Patients are seen for one to three one-hour sessions by a resident and a faculty member. The other faculty member and residents watch on closed circuit television. This format allows for discussion of interview techniques, diagnostic and management issues, and community resources. Relevant readings are assigned and discussed. This teaching experience provides a service to residents and patients and provides teaching of the biopsychosocial approach.
