Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to the complexity of the phenomenon of collective memory, with a specific focus on the construction, reconstruction, and distortion of collective memories. The underlying mechanisms of memory construction and reconstruction that are discussed in depth include the opposition of collective memory and history; the process of memory construction and memory distortion, as well as the role of official producers of the collective memory, such as textbooks and media, in memory construction and manipulation; the role of the other in the construction of memory; and the contribution of the individual memory to the construction of collective memory.
