Abstract
The grounding mode of medium voltage direct current (MVDC) distribution system is closely related to the grounding mode of alternating current (AC) distribution system to which it is connected, in addition to factors such as the type of converter, the wiring form of converter, and the system reliability requirement. Based on the analysis and summary of the characteristic of typical grounding modes of AC distribution system and flexible high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, with the goal of reducing fault current and speeding up fault recovery, the characteristics of different grounding modes for MVDC distribution system were studied. This paper presents the typical grounding modes of MVDC distribution system with pseudo bipolar and true bipolar connection, which is composed of modular multilevel converter (MMC) and two /three-level converter and the recommended grounding schemes were given through theoretical and simulation analysis. Lastly, the simulation model of a flexible direct current (DC) distribution system demonstration project was built by MATLAB Simulink. The correctness of the theoretical analysis was verified with simulation, and the result was used in the demonstration project construction.
