Abstract

The quadrupole interaction frequencies νQ=e 2 qQ/ h of 173 Ta(J π= 5 2 (−) and 175 Ta(J π= 7 2 + ; Nilsson configuration 7 2 +[404] in a Lu single crystal were measured with nuclear orientation at temperatures down to 10 mK to be −247(25) MHz and +470(45) MHz, respectively. The positive sign of ν Q( 175 Ta Lu) proves that the sign of the electric field gradient of Ta Lu is positive. The spectroscopic quadrupole moments of 173Ta and 175Ta are deduced to be −1.9(2) b and +3.65(35) b, respectively. The negative spectroscopic QM of 173Ta can be explained only by a J πK= 5 2 (−) 1 2 ground-state configuration.
