Abstract

The frequency and duration of grooming interactions were studied for more than 400 h in relation to the menstrual and reproductive cycles in a troop of free-ranging baboons (Papio ursinus). Adult males and cycling females were proportionately more active as groomers and groomees than other classes of baboons. Adult males groomed only adult female consorts when their sexual skins were maximally swollen at mid-cycle. Females with flat sexual skins in the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle groomed other cycling females and non-consorting adult males at high levels. The role of grooming in relation to ejaculatory mechanisms in those species in which copulation consists of an extended series of mounts by the male and which exhibit prolonged periods of sexual consortship is discussed.
