Abstract

In this unpublished manuscript, probably from the second half of 1819, Gregoire reaffirmed his complete devotion to the principles of representative democracy, constitutional arrangements for society, and his refusal of excessive spending by governments. In the name of these principles, Gregoire formed a negative judgment on the kingdom of northern Haiti, where the King Cristophe (Henry the First) ruled. At the same time, he rescinded his more favorable (or pragmatic) judgment of the same kingdom of 1815.
