Abstract

Novel pyrano[3,4-b]pyran derivatives were designed through a greener multicomponent reaction of 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-pyrone, various aldehydes, and malononitrile using SrFe12O19, in an expeditious reaction. The sensing properties of 2-amino-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)7-methyl-5-oxo-4H,5H-pyrano[3,4-b]pyran-3-carbonitrile (10−4 M) were investigated for assorted metal cations wherein Hg2+ ions (10−2 M) could be selectively detected by this compound with a remarkable detection limit of 4.56 × 10−6.
