Greene County Boys Sing For Scholarships

Abstract

Six Missouri physicians from the Greene County Medical Society have established a program to put needy students through medical school "on wings of song." Their Medical Hit Parade includes songs about subjects ranging from hemorrhoids and borborygmi to public relations men. Heading the singing group is James T. Brown, MD, a surgeon from Springfield. He organized the ensemble (known as the "Greene County Boys") in 1958. Brown also wrote the lyrics for all 60 songs in the group's repertoire, and sparked the idea to make three recordings which have swelled the scholarship and loan fund to $46,876 in five years. Twenty-three students, most of them attending the University of Missouri Medical School, received financial assistance last year in the form of loans and scholarships.
