Abstract

Information and communication technology (ICT) plays a crucial role in education sector. But ICT has negative impact if it is not used effectively. ICT needs to be used efficiently by keeping environment sustainability in mind to protect our mother Earth. The remarkable climate change in current years is a pointer that the Earth is sick. The entire world is responsible to save our environment. India has acknowledged the principle of sustainable development as part of their development policy. The Green or sustainable ICT practices are desirable to be followed by everyone for future sustainability. Every individual in the field of ICT is required to be a trendsetter for ICT sustainability, which is becoming an emerging research field. The objective of the paper is to recommend Green ICT techniques to be followed by higher education institutions. This paper provides introductory definitions of Green or sustainable ICT. It explains the importance of Green ICT. The study followed a qualitative methodological approach and primary data were collected through questionnaire and interview. These research findings show that Green ICT practices and awareness is less among the students of the selected education institutions in Pune in India. Based on the result analysis, the author has suggested techniques to improve Green ICT awareness in higher education institutions in order to solve some of the most challenging problems related to future sustainability.
