In this era of ever-more-common and ever-more-sophisticated numerical models, this book by Jozsef Toth is a welcome reminder of the great amount one can learn about a groundwater flow system by simply examining a geologic cross section and applying fundamental concepts of gravitational groundwater flow. The importance of groundwater in geologic processes, including the formation of ore deposits, has become increasingly evident in recent years, creating a growing desire amongst earth scientists who lack formal hydrogeologic training to better understand regional-scale groundwater flow. The strength of the book is that it satisfies this need beautifully for those interested in gravitational flow systems, which typically dominate to depths of a few kilometers.
