Abstract

A probable scenario of combustion of graphite from the graphite stack of the core of the Unit 4 reactor at Chernobyl NPP during the accident of April 26, 1986, was discussed. The deciding role in combustion was for the first time attributed to the sectional ring bushings intended for imporving the heat transfer from the heat carrier in the process channel to graphite of the stack. The assumptions made were supported by appropriate calculations.
