Abstract

Defining the role and image of grandfathers in the past is not an easy task. The present study is based on the presentation and analysis of a limited number of texts found in contemporary memoirs and daily journals. What was the position of the grandfather within the family ? How did his descendants view him ? And how did he view himself ?... Victor Hugo is the uncontested poet lauréat of grandfatherly tenderness and affection. Two kings of France, Louis XIV and LouisXV, maintained close epistolary relations with their grandsons (one in Spain, the other at Parma) ; their letters contain many expressions of personal sentiment and allow us to perceive the nature of the affective bond. To broaden and deepen this preliminary, impressionistic sketch, considerable further research will be necessary in these and other sources.
