Abstract

This paper presents the experimental values of relative energy γ gb γ s for grain boundaries (GB) in < 11 2 - 0 > / φ bicrystal samples with different misorientations and inclinations at −5°C and −18 °C. The relative energy γ gb γ s depends on misorientation and inclination of grain boundary showing greater variability at −18 °C than at −5°C. All the samples studied show that γ gb γ s increases with grain boundary inclination at −18 °C and that it is higher in asymmetric than in symmetric grain boundaries. Finally, the values of γ gb γ s were compared to a grain boundary structure model based on the lattice of coincident sites (CSL) for ice.
