Abstract
Abstract Changes in the energy of a grain boundary (GB) population during selective grain growth in nickel and 316L austenitic steel after critical strain have been studied using the thermal grooves method. It was found that the average GB energy γgb increases as a function of the annealing temperature, and consequently as a function of the average grain size d. These changes are interpreted in terms of reactions between GBs during growth. The critical condition for growth to occur is that dγgb must be less than (γgb/d) dd.MST/246
