Abstract

The Coudert Legislative Investigation into educational administration in New York City revealed that in normal times higher education is avail able to first quartile and in many instances to only first quintile of graduating classes of City's academic high schools.1 As further evi dence of aptitude for college success of these students this report stated that the typical student who entered four colleges under consideration surpassed almost seventy-five per cent of freshmen in 318 colleges which reported results on tests that year.2 The tests referred to were 1940-1941 American Council on Education Psychological Examinations. Recognizing that nature and extent of student losses are among measures of efficiency of an institution, Hunter College, one of four municipal colleges discussed in report, is legitimately concerned with finding an answer to question: Why is there a relatively heavy student mortality when admission is highly selective ?
