Abstract
The positions of the graben-like troughs in the eastern part of the Russian platform are delineated more precisely, structure sections are presented, and their ages and evolution are noted. The troughs can be divided on the basis of their initiation into Bavlinsk (Precambrian) and Devonian. Regardless of age, the troughs can also be divided into: 1) large, associated with an integral series of flexures and faults, and 2) small, probably controlled by one major fault. Only two of the smaller, very narrow type of trough — Al'keevsk and Altunino-Shunaksk — are recognized and their characteristic structure and evolution has not been established. Characteristics of the large troughs — Sernovodsk-Abdulino, Ryazan-Saratov, Vyatsk, and the hypothetical Don-Medveditsa (and in the west, Krestsovsk and Dnepr-Donetz) are enumerated: among these are elongated outline and roughly linear sides and retention of their contours throughout their history. Duration of subsidence is usually no longer than a single tectonic cyc...
