Abstract
Governments in Australia play an important role in the provision of education at all levels. This paper reviews the assistance provided by governments to students in Australian universities. It first provides some background information on the history and structure of the Australian higher education sector and then discusses the two major forms of government financial assistance: assistance with fees and assistance through income support.
