Abstract

Generally, garlic (Allium sativum) causes attention because of its aroma that lingers long after consumption. However, and apart from any ability it might have to deter vampires, there is some recent good news about this odoriferous food additive. Yuji Karasaki et al. of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Kitakyushu (Japan) report [Food Res. Int. (2001) 34, 7–13] that a lectin extracted from garlic has a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of human tumor cells. Perhaps the cancer cells cannot bear the smell either. [New Sci.
