Abstract
Why did God permit the Holocaust has long perplexed scholars, clergy, and laypersons. Iran’s possible nuclear annihilation of Israel has sparked renewed interest in God’s relationship to Jews. After presenting two possible explanations of evil, the traditional view of an all-powerful just God or an absence of the Divine, the essay offers a more nuanced view of the Eternal, as One Who is all-good, caring and sharing in human suffering, but not all-powerful. The essay urges humans to be active partners with God, not passively accepting events.
