Abstract

Goal attainment scaling (GAS) is a method designed to evaluate services according to the attainment of specific goals. The method has been found to be useful in clinical program evaluation and has organizational and educational applications. GAS was used to evaluate the effectiveness of a program of continuing education designed to improve the following areas: (1) knowledge of the nature of standardized tests and their development; (2) knowledge of approaches used to critique standardized tests; and (3) knowledge of the availability of standardized tests and their alternatives. Following the continuing education seminar, the GAS results revealed a T score of 68, indicating that the overall program had a better than expected outcome. The implications of using GAS as a method of continuing education evaluation are discussed.
