Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper is a theoretical and policy-oriented study that explores globalization and the world youth unemployment challenge in relation to “sustainable livelihoods.” On examining Canada's international internship initiative in the context of new federal Sustainable Development Strategies, it concedes that the federal internship initiative has begun to address some broader unemployment problems while stimulating new youth employment opportunities. However, it has not proactively supported sustainable development, and not adequately responded to the forces, challenges and complexities of globalization to ensure socio-economic and ecological sustainability in Canada and abroad. The paper also raises theoretical and policy issues for future research.
