Abstract

In the competitive environment under globalization, Southeast Asia has developed rapidly and its cities have been spearheading a physical and economic transformation. New forms of urbanism have characterized the emerging processes of urbanization and globalization in the region. These include mega-urban regions, growth triangles and world cities. Examples of these are highlighted. Globalization has led to societies in Southeast Asia going through rapid changes. The rise of the middle class and persistent poverty pose sharp contrasts. New communication technologies have also brought new cultural values into societies. Rural-urban dynamics are evolving as the telematics revolution has radically changed the relations between city and countryside. The question of the sustainability of recent development in Southeast Asia is raised against the recent financial crisis.
