Abstract

The 21st Century will demand an approach to societal leadership that thus far has been neither evident nor needed. In searching for appropriate models for the coming century, most people continue to review men's patterns of leadership. Few appreciate the equivalent patterns of historic and potential success in women leaders. This article focuses on the set of women who have achieved the highest level of global leadership either as global political leaders - presidents or prime ministers of countries - or as global business leaders - CEOs of major multinational companies. The article reviews the women's backgrounds, paths to power and contributions to their organizations and countries, as well as to society. It explores and explodes some of the most prominent myths about how women gain and use power.
