Abstract
The aim of this study is to illustrate the main features of the Hungarian system of criminal sanctions and to focus on some problematic issues of the current sanction system in relation to fix-term imprisonment and life imprisonment and also the punitive nature of criminal law.

The Hungarian penal system is a conjunctive and also an alternative dualistic sanction system, given that penalties and preventive measures can be applied to the same criminal offence at the same time or only one of the two cri minal legal consequences
In Hungary imprisonment represents the one end in the scale of penal seve rity: on the statutory level, the strictest type of punishment in the Criminal Code is imprisonment, and in the ranking order of punishments according to their severity it is followed by the con finement/ confinement as a penalty entailing deprivation of personal liberty, too.[2]
Confinement as a penalty may be imposed for minor offences for the duration of 5-90 days, so it can be regarded as a short-term impri sonment
Summary
The Hungarian penal system is a conjunctive and also an alternative dualistic sanction system, given that penalties and preventive measures can be applied to the same criminal offence at the same time or only one of the two cri minal legal consequences. Compulsory psychiatric treatment is the only undetermined penal sanction in the current palette of sanctions, given that the Criminal Code does not maximize the duration of the preventive measure.
