Abstract

Glass based optical fibers and guided-wave optical components for telecommunications are reviewed. Following the successful development of silica fibers, investigation has moved on to non-silica fibers, which have the potential for an ultra-low transmission loss. High-silica guided-wave optical components, which are compatible with optical fiber transmission systems, are under rapid development.
