Abstract

In this day of female emancipation, it is not unusual for women to be engaged in studies of the exact sciences. It was not very long ago, however, that popular opinion opposed such pursuits, and opportunities for such studies were virtually nonexistent for most women. This is reflected in the annals of the history of mathematics where, between Hypatia of ancient times and Emmy Noether of our own, very few names of distinguished female mathematicians are recorded. In this paper, we shall consider briefly the life and scientific work of five extraordinary women, who did achieve mathematical distinction. They are Hypatia, Maria Agnesi, Sophie Germain, Sonja Kovalevsky, and Emmy Noether.
