Abstract

The article uses archival documents to explain the events that transpired on the Black Sea during the first months of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). Armenia, a large motor vessel that served as a hospital ship, was sunk as a result of a Luftwaffe air raid on November 7, 1941. Almost nothing was known about the disaster that occurred 80 years ago until recently, and specific documents that could shed light on the circumstances of the sinking are still classified as top secret. In 2020, an expedition of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation discovered a ship in the Black Sea, which was later identified as the hospital ship Armenia by experts from the Underwater Research Center of the Russian Geographical Society (URC RGS). We present our own version of the Armenia tragedy based on documents from seven Russian federal archives and the results of underwater research conducted by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation together with the Russian Geographical Society’s Underwater Research Center.
