Abstract
Giant amoebal viruses were discovered in the beginning of the 21st century and broke many paradigms of traditional virology related to particle size and genome content. These viruses are associated with different amoebae species and have been found in various places on the planet. Due to their astonishing complexity, giant viruses lie in the center of a hot debate about the origin and evolution of viruses. Moreover, they can be parasitized by other viruses, named virophages, and have their own genetic mobilome. In this article, we describe the history and general features of the giant viruses and their parasites.
