Abstract The general-relativistic cosmological models with non-zero cosmological constant A are reviewed. Some observable quantities are plotted for models with various values of A and density. The possibilities of focusing of light rays at the antipode of a source in a homogeneous closed world model are discussed. Only low-density Lemaltre models, with A greater than but close to a critical value A~, have sufficiently long ages to allow the formation of ghost images with reasonably small redshifts (z «= 2). It is shown that in an inhomogeneous universe (the real world of galaxies and clusters of galaxies) the simple focusing is destroyed: (i) Instead of focusing into a point the light rays from a point source pass on the average within a distance of 1O~ to 106 Pc of the source's antipode. (ii) The image of the source is not smeared out but is split into many images. The modification of the magnitude~redshift relation due to these effects is also discussed. I.
