Abstract
The town of Gent developed since the Early Middle Ages into one of the most important towns of north-western Europe in the tenth century famous for its cloth industry. The wealth generated in the textile industry is testified by the large number of medieval stone houses in the town. The quality of information extracted from written sources and architecture contrasts with the limited amount of traditional archaeological evidence from excavations in Gent.
