with being a good student are well documented, but in nursing and midwifery, where 50 per cent of the undergraduate course is spent in practice, it is essential that students demonstrate the same characteristics on placement as they do in the classroom (see box). Strategies for a good placement can help a new intake of nursing students beginning to practise for the first time to succeed. Before the placement starts, students can help themselves by finding out as much as possible about the area, reading up on the range of clinical scenarios most commonly seen there and compiling a list of learning objectives to discuss with their mentor. Students need to double check transport arrangements, shift times and the name of their mentor. Domestic arrangements, such as childcare, should be in place. Students can study the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidance on professional conduct for nursing and midwifery students. It is based on the four core principles in the NMC code: care of people is the priority for all nurses;
