Abstract

Public schools are usually administrate by career teachers appointed or elected to it. The objective of this research is to understand how the learning of school managers takes place, regarding management practices, identifying their professional profiles, their difficulties, and ways found to overcome them in their daily lives.. The paper is characterized as a descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, developed through interviews with 15 managers from 14 high schools in a city in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre/RS. The interviewed managers reported as main difficulties: lack of human and financial resources, and difficulty in interpersonal relationships to ensure commitment of work teams. The result of the research allowed to conclude that the learning of the managers occurs as they begin to experience the new activity, in the exchange of experiences with managers of other schools or co-workers, therefore, the peer help prevails, in comparison. formal assistance from government structures.
