Abstract
The role of society in political advisory has been widely discussed over the last years. Different conceptions of societal consultation led to different expectations, which is why the term needs to be refined. This article starts with defining societal consultation as a certain type of policy advice which is based on the interplay of citizens’ inputs and scientific expertise. It aims at characterizing modes of deliberation by identifying institutional arrangements as well as the actors involved.
