Abstract

Fereshta Ludin was born in Afghanistan in 1972 but moved to Germany in 1985 and, in 1995, became a German citizen.1 Her goal was to become a schoolteacher. Having passed two state exams that qualified her to teach German, English, and social studies in public elementary schools, she applied for a position as a teacher in a state school in Baden-Wurttemberg. When Ludin declared that she would wear the Muslim head scarf not only in private but also in the classroom, the school board rejected her application.
