Abstract

During the process of patient care that the generated effluents and wastes need appropriate management, asking foran effective waste health services management plan, in order to avoid adverse effects caused by inadequate management. The objective of this study is to report the improvements in health service waste management processes in a public Hospital based upon actions taken as follow-up of routine and of the internal handling of waste; definition of preventive, orrective and and improvement actions of waste management; development of assessment instruments and control, including the construction of indicators; and the update of Standard Operating Procedures and management Plan. The intervention in the institution stimulated changes in the process, with correction of non-conformities and improvements in the stages of management, with positive involvement of Managers and Waste Core. However, there was no continuous measurement of the amount of waste generated, which it is necessary to achieve the reduction target. On the other hand, there was a reduction in cases of injuries involving sharp materials, showing that the actions established were successful and serve as a great incentive for continuous process improvement.
