Abstract

Geothermal drillings in Romania discovered several geothermal areas of economic importance in the Western Plain (Pannonian depression), the Moesic platform and the Getic depression. In the Western Plain thermal waters have accumulated in Triassic and Cretaceous carbonates as well as in Pannonian sandy deposits. In the Moesic platform thermal waters circulate through Jurassic and Cretaceous carbonates, while in the Getic depression they are hosted in Cretaceous sandstones and conglomerates, as well as in Miocene sands and conglomerates. Temperatures of 60– 120°C were recorded within these geothermal areas, the highest being recorded in the Western Plain. Thermal water wells yield between 10–50 l/s. The established geothermal potential is utilized for heating greenhouses, flats and factories, for domestic water supply and in the textile, furniture, ceramic and cereal industries.
