Abstract
Aerial personnel devices are common equipment in industry today. At an electrical utility, aerial devices are used to position personnel and equipment during line work. Periodic mechanical and electrical tests are necessary to determine the integrity of the boom structure. This paper contains a brief overview of the Georgia Power fleet and the acoustic emission test program. The actual mechanics of a day to day test program are discussed. The acoustic emission acceptance criteria used by Georgia Power for aerial devices is discussed, and actual test results are examined to show the test program benefits. Safety, reduced service intervals, and extended service life can be assured with an adequate testing program.
