Abstract Apparently overlooked both in critical work on Eliot and in biographical research concerning the fascinating Gilchrist family, Grace Gilchrist’s long-overlooked essay on “George Eliot and Her Creed” seems never to have been reprinted since its appearance in mid-1894 in The Author. This reprinting, with a detailed introduction and notes, encourages us to reconsider the implications and repercussions of the brief encounter between the Gilchrists and the Leweses in the summer of 1871.
