Abstract

Deep structure and properties and features of the geophysical fields of the Panxi region, in the middle of the Kang-Dian (Kangding-Yunnan) tectonic belt, are studied as a whole. The study is based on the detection of magnetic field (including paleomagnetic dating, aeromagnetics), geothermal field, natural earthquake, plate motion, explosion seismology and magneto-electrotelluric sounding. The results show that the Panxi tectonic zone is neither a completely withered ancient rift nor a modern rift system in the heyday having come into being since the Mesozoic or the Cenozoic era, but it is an active tectonic zone (i. e. a "resuscitating" ancient rift zone) formed and reformed by magma activity and tectonic movements in adjacent regions.
