Abstract

CaO–Al2O3–CaF2 system is the most basic slag system for electroslag remelting (ESR). Its physicochemical properties, such as viscosity, electrical conductivity and sulfide capacity are all critical to the control and optimization of ESR process. However, it is difficult to obtain all these data through experiment. In this article, an extended geometrical model is introduced for the prediction of these three properties, while three empirical models for various properties are also used for comparison. The present model shows better agreements with the experimental data than the other three empirical models with the mean deviations being 11.0%, 11.2% and 1.7% for viscosity, electrical conductivity and sulfide capacity respectively. The contour lines of various properties are also calculated by the present model. It is anticipated that the introduction of the present model will simplify the calculation of physicochemical properties of metallurgical slags and promote the optimization of ESR process greatly.
