Abstract
Brazil has an area of 3,286,000 square miles. Of this, more than 1,000,000 square miles is occupied by sedimentary basins large enough to be interesting from a petroleum exploration viewpoint. Ten large basins are described as possibly petroliferous. Geological, geophysical, and drilling operations are under way in these sedimentary areas under the direction of the National Petroleum Council of Brazil which has headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. To date, nine oil fields have been discovered in Brazil. These are located northwest of the city of Salvador in the state of Bahia. Daily production of crude oil in Bahia is 2,500 barrels which is also the refining capacity of this area. The present trend in Brazil is toward an accelerated and expanded exploration and development pro ram by the Brazilian Government under the direction of the National Petroleum Council.
